PostgreSQL is my database of choice; skydiving is my adrenaline rush of choice!

I started my technology-heavy career in 2003 working in the professional audio industry from a computing perspective. By 2008 I had become fully immersed in the world of databases, programming, and automating away tedious data-related tasks for the office. PostGIS was the driving force behind my initial use, and eventual love, of PostgreSQL.

This session will be a live demo to show how easy it is to import high quality OpenStreetMap data into PostGIS / Postgres. The long-used osm2pgsql tool has a new Flex output (Flex == "flexible") that has completely changed the game! This demo highlights how the osm2pgsql Flex output is being used by PgOSM-Flex to provide a high quality "off-the-shelf" experience, and how it can be further customized to suit your geospatial data needs!

The improved data loaded to PostGIS:

  • Logically groups data (roads, places, water, etc.)
  • PRIMARY KEY everywhere
  • Keep relations, exclude duplicating members
  • COMMENT ON TABLE/COLUMN/VIEW IS 'Descriptive';
  • Pre- and post-processing improvements
  • Mix and Match feature layers (Only load what you need!)

The demo will use the PgOSM-Flex Docker image for the easiest process, best suited for small regions (e.g. smaller than North America!). Everything shown can be easily accomplished without Docker for more flexibility and loading larger regions.
