PostgreSQL has emerged as the “API” for relational data management. Its proven success in a wide range of applications and solid open-source foundation have cultivated a broad ecosystem of users, packaged offerings, and tools. The move to managed services in the cloud gives many organizations a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rationalize their database usage. An increasing number of them are standardizing on PostgreSQL.

In this presentation we will cover how we extended Cloud Spanner to support a PostgreSQL interface. Within this context, we'll characterize the broader market’s different approaches to integrating PostgreSQL into cloud-native, scale-out environments. Given our experience, we’ll explore areas for future innovation within the PostgreSQL ecosystem to support cloud and distributed architectures.
