Stored procedures have been a feature of Postgres for years. They were designed to let developers execute data or compute-intensive logic directly where the data lives—in the database—thereby reducing network latency. However, even in 2024, this relational database feature hasn’t gained widespread adoption within developer communities for various reasons.
PgCompute is a new client-side PostgreSQL extension that aims to change the status quo by changing the way developers create and use stored procedures. Similar to the rest of the application logic, developers can build, optimize, and maintain database functions by using their preferred IDE and programming language. Get introduced to PgCompute and learn how it can open up a new frontier for Postgres within developer communities.
